Protection of the Murnauer Moos

    Description of solution
    Summary (Challenges; Objectives)

The area represents the largest and qualitatively most important bog complex of the Alpine fens in Central Europe. The aim of the project is to secure the totality of the natural or near-natural habitats, in particular the wetlands, nutrient-poor grasslands, moor forests and the forests of the so-called Köchel, on a large scale and permanently and to develop them according to the requirements of nature conservation. Diverse habitats such as the Murnauer Moos would not survive if their near-natural biotopes, such as the moors, were isolated in an otherwise intensively used environment. Up to now, traditionally used areas around the moors, such as extensive pastures or the litter meadows, could be maintained over a large area. However, especially in the southern parts of the area, an increase in the size of the plots and the associated intensification of agricultural use has been observed for some years now. In addition, the abandonment of the use of the litter meadows has an increasingly negative effect on the structure and population of the flora and fauna. It is therefore a central concern of this large-scale nature conservation project to preserve litter meadows permanently. Where areas are covered with bushes or reeds due to abandonment of use, the original habitats will be restored through appropriate measures.
