    Summary (Challenges; Objectives)

Between Ottobeuren and Westerheim the Günz has never been regulated and therefore a good example for a natural river course. In order to maintain or improve the good ecological status the water authority Kempten has set up a river development plan. Priority is given to the  self-dynamic development of the Westliche Günz and its banks. The main goal is to provide the stream with 15 m wide bank strips on both sides. Here the water has room to shift further and offers areas for the preservation and development of a floodplain forest, an important goal in the Flora-Fauna-Habitat-Area (FFH) Westliche Günz.Embankments are usually only secured in a natural way in areas where bridges, paths, roads or buildings are endangered.
