In the Lake Constance region, at least 60 small waters are to be created or renaturalized. Jointly developed environmental education measures will sensitize the population to these important habitats and increase acceptance.
"Gravitational natural hazards such as snow avalanches, rockfalls, shallow landslides and volcanic activity represent a risk to mountain communities around the world. In particular, where documentary records about these processes are rare, decisions on risk management and land-use planning have to be based on a variety of other sources including vegetation, tree-ring data and natural hazard process models."
The general mission of this program is to restore the vegetation cover of the Mata Atlântica biome in the city of Rio de Janeiro by recovering degraded and permanent protection areas. The program started in the 1980s as part of measures by city hall to increase the quality of lif e in the informal settlements. The activities were from the beginning implemented with strong social inclusion as the workers for reforesting the areas came from the surrounding communities.
Technical and capacity development measures are applied in watersheds threatened by climate change. Relevant professionals are supported in vulnerability assessments. Inclusion of population is ensured through the involvement in stakeholder platforms. Innovative EbA approaches like the “living weir” approach are based on local knowledge and initiatives and are implemented for demonstration purposes.
HYBRID NBSs: Combination of biological measure (reforestation) /engineering measures (check dams, guiding dikes) and social measures (reducing human disturbance)
"After a century of degradation due to mining, logging, acidification, and grazing, the 130-km2 Copper Basin in southeastern Tennessee became the site of increasingly extensive and successful reforestation efforts.""Although not intended as such, the denudation and later reforestation of the Copper Basin can be regarded as a long-termexperiment from which much can be learned about the effects of these landscape changes on the rainfall runoff response of hillslopes.""Results of 54 rainfall simulation experiments ...
"Increases in extreme precipitation events of floods and droughts are expected to occur worldwide. The increase in extreme events will result in changes in streamflow that are expected to affect water availability for human consumption and aquatic ecosystem function.""daily long-term data from paired watersheds that have undergone forest harvest or species conversion were used.
"The objective of the LIFE-EnviFriendly project was to demonstrate low cost, nature based solutions that if used by all farmers within a watershed it will improve the water quality of the waters significantly. The NBS used in this case was a riparian forest restoration coupled with a river bank erosion protection. A bank restoration system using large stones following the rivers curvatures to stabilize the bank and the riparian zone from future flood events was designed and constructed.
The rain gardens of the Great Mosque give an example of a sustainable urban drainage system built 1000 years ago. The Great Mosque is a world heritage site by UNESCO; therefore the rain gardens are protected and will continue to provide a sustainable irrigation system needed for the arid climate of Andalusia.
