Restoration of the Walger Franz stream
Due to the piping of the Walger Franz stream and a small drop structure, the entrance for fish to the small stream was impossible. To improve fish migration the water authority Weilheim removed the pipe and the drop structure. In the event of flooding, it is now possible for fish to withdraw from the powerful flow of the Isar.
Ecological restoration of the Las Motas pine forest in Alénya
Forest clearance work to allow the development of the most beautiful trees and to limit the risks linked to the fall of decaying trees and fires.
Close to nature Westliche Günz
Between Ottobeuren and Westerheim the Günz has never been regulated and therefore a good example for a natural river course. In order to maintain or improve the good ecological status the water authority Kempten has set up a river development plan. Priority is given to the  self-dynamic development of the Westliche Günz and its banks. The main goal is to provide the stream with 15 m wide bank strips on both sides. Here the water has room to shift further and offers areas for the preservation and development of a floodplain forest, an important goal in the Flora-Fauna-Habitat-Area (FFH) Westliche Günz.

Conversion of three thresholds into shallow river bed ramps with natural redesign of the water profile and its banks
The two ground threshold in Felheim and the one in Pleß are currently impassable for aquatic organisms, such as fish or micro-organisms moving on the ground. By converting the concrete sleepers into shallow ramps, the passability for aquatic organisms is achieved. A sole ramp provides passability over the entire width of the watercourse. The watercourse section is extended and creates new valuable habitat.  The aim of the measure is to achieve good ecological status or, in the case of heavily modified water bodies, good ecological potential in accordance with the Water Resources Act (§ 27 WHG). The status of the habitat for aquatic... more
Creation of a Park for water retention: The Cloudburst Management Plan, Copenhagen
Following 2011 floods, the Copenhagen Concretization Plans were commissioned to combat climate change. "These integrated, multi-disciplinary plans bridge the gap between planning and site-specific solutions through the application of a typology-based Cloudburst Toolkit. The “Cloudburst Management Plan” addresses 8 central city catchments (Norrebro, Ladegards-aen and Vesterbro, Valby & Vanlose), encompassing a total area of 34 km². It includes 300 separate projects that are expected to run over the course of the next 20 years." "The lake becomes a multi-fonctional park space with recreation, fitness, and heritage amenities that... more
Afforestation in Romania
In Romania, the official statements recognize the importance of afforestation and one important objective of the National Afforestation Programme (2004) and the Forest Code (2008) was the afforestation of 2 million hectares of degraded lands. Moreover, the Law no. 100 /2010 regarding the afforestation of degraded lands was a new reinforcement of that ambitious objective, but the new versions of the National Afforestation Programme from 2010 and 2013 altered successively the target from 2 million hectares to 422 thousand hectares, respectively to 229 thousand hectares.
OPTI'PRAIRIES: Grasslands, a pillar in the evolution of breeding systems towards triple performance
Thirteen livestock farmers from Ariège (mainly beef and cow's milk production) have come together around a common goal: to strengthen the role of natural pasture in their production systems. The Opti`Prairies Economic and Environmental Interest Group (GIEE) has been set up to create new benchmarks for high quality, low environmental impact livestock farming by giving pastures renewed importance.   It consists in implementing multispecies grasslands, temporary grasslands based on a mixture of at least three species from two different families. It favours a reduction in inputs. The choice of the species takes into account to adapt to the... more
Restoration of the Schellenbergmoor
As part of the moor and climate protection program "KLIP 2020" of the Free State of Bavaria, the approximately 3.3-hectare Kesselmoor within the Schellenbergmoor was restored. The aim is to preserve the original Spirken moor forest (Vaccinio uliginosi-Pinetum rotundatae), which is threatened by dehydration. The Kesselmoor was crossed diagonally by a strongly overgrown drainage ditch, whose drainage effect has been prevented since the installation of 10 peat dams in January 2011. The resulting increased soil water level should have the effect that the competing spruce growth is pushed back, the acrotelm (= bog soil) formation in the inner... more
Assessing NBS benefits, dis-benefits and co-benefits and ways to optimize them in a Mediterranean catchment: the Brague DEMO case study
The public perception of ecosystems (e.g. forests, including possibly protecting ones) is strongly worsened following floods with massive wood jams. This case study aims at performing a comprehensive and in-depth analysis of a Mediterranean catchment to assess NBS benefits, dis-benefits and co-benefits and ways to optimize them. The NAIAD project will help to better understand what occurred in details and in which extend Nature-Based Solutions may help to improve the situation. Among others, the three NAIAD partners mainly involved in the DEMO study will in particular: Study risk and ecosystem perception through interviews and workshops,... more
Licca Liber - The Lech river from barrage 23 to the outlet Augsburg: Section 7 and 9
Green strips along the banks of the Lech river allow the riverbed to widen in places in these two sections. This improves access to the water for the populationand  provides the opportunity to soften the strongly straightened bank lines by a near-natural design. The measures are part of the project Licca Liber.
